ECCOMAS has learned with great sadness of the passing of Professor Eduardo Arantes e Oliveira, a distinguished scholar in Portuguese engineering, higher education and scientific research.
During his career, Professor Arantes e Oliveira served as Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, Rector of the Technical University of Lisbon and Director of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC). He made important contributions to engineering education, research and science policy in Portugal.
As one of the founders of the Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics (APMTAC), he played an important role in the development of the Portuguese mechanics community and in strengthening its international connections. His work and leadership influenced generations of engineers and researchers.
ECCOMAS joins APMTAC and the wider mechanics community in mourning Professor Eduardo Arantes e Oliveira’s passing and extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues and former students.
