ECCOMAS Advanced Courses (EACs)2024-12-19T11:13:46+01:00

Following ECCOMAS’s objectives to stimulate and promote education in its field of operation (see bylaws www.eccomas.org ), ECCOMAS initiates calls for the organization of ECCOMAS Advanced Courses, Schools and Workshops , for simplicity denoted as ECCOMAS Advanced Courses (EAC) in the following.

Background:

ECCOMAS unites 23 national and regional associations representing 31 sovereign states in Europe. This puts ECCOMAS in a unique position to provide, stimulate and facilitate high-level advanced education for young investigators in the field of computational science and engineering. The proliferation of European research-funding programs provides impetus to the organization of educational and training activities at the doctoral and postdoctoral level on a European scale. In addition, ECCOMAS can offer a forum especially designed for participants from industry.

Framework:

The educational events should be announced under a common umbrella in a unified format as ECCOMAS Advanced Course, School or Workshop; enough flexibility for the layout of the event with regard to content and organization is provided. Either newly developed events or existing course series can be integrated in this program. They can take place in odd or in even years, but should not be in conflict with other ECCOMAS events.

The financial arrangements for each event are the responsibility of the organizers. At the same time, it is understood that these courses reflect the objective of ECCOMAS as a non-profit organization, which is in general satisfied by an organization in conjunction with a higher educational institution like a university, a public research institute or a scientific association.

The following types of Advances Courses may be organized:

  1. Stand-alone courses not related to other ECCOMAS events or other scientific institutions, in arbitrary times and locations in Europe,
  2. Courses in cooperation with other scientific institutions, as for example the CISM-ECCOMAS International Summer Schools,
  3. Courses taking place in the framework of ECCOMAS events, such as ECCOMAS Congresses, ECCM and ECFD Conferences and ECCOMAS Thematic Conferences, as pre- or post-conference events.

ECCOMAS will support each EAC by disseminating the event via entries in its website, through its regular email announcements and its newsletters. Furthermore, posters and leaflets will be distributed at other ECCOMAS events. For a uniform corporate design identity ECCOMAS will provide templates for leaflets and homepages allowing the necessary freedom for the individual character of the event.

Courses 1 will be the standard format in this program; they may be singular or periodically recurring courses. Besides events offered for young investigators special courses with a focus on industrial applications are in particular encouraged.

Organization, scientific orientation and financial aspects of Courses 2 are regulated by the agreement with the respective partner institution.

Courses 3 are arranged in collaboration with the organizers of the corresponding conference. Since these pre- or post-conference events are integrated in the respective ECCOMAS conference they will be announced in an entry on the homepage of the respective meeting. The strong interaction with the conference organization should allow that participants could register and make the payment directly via the conference website.

For the integration of Advanced Courses 1 and 3 within this program and the offered support, ECCOMAS will ask for a fee, depending on the number of participants and the target audience. A general rule for a modest amount will be defined by the Managing Board and announced on its website. The contribution is not required for events without registration fees.

Rules & Conditions

Application:

Proposals for ECCOMAS Advanced Courses, Schools and Workshops (EACs) should be sent by member associations or by individual members to the ECCOMAS Secretariat in Barcelona () any time, however not later than one year before the event. The application has to be approved by the Managing Board which can authorize the Executive Committee (EC) and the related Technical Committee for a final decision. It is planned that this decision should be done not later than three months after the application.

A proposal should include the following items:

  • Title of the Advanced Course, School or Workshop
  • Venue and date
  • Organizers
  • Objectives and target group
  • Scientific/technical areas covered
  • Number of participants expected
  • Participation fee
  • Estimated budget for the event

After the event the organizers are asked to submit

  • a report to the ECCOMAS EC and the related Technical Committee on the results and main parameters of the event, including the overall budget and financial balance, and the results of a survey among the participants – for the report ECCOMAS provides a uniform survey template.
  • a prognosis for planned future editions of the event.

Contribution:

A contribution to ECCOMAS of 10 € per non-industrial participant, and in case of participants from industry 10 % of the respective registration fee is expected. The financial arrangements for each event are the responsibility of the conference organisers.

For the CISM-ECCOMAS Summer School such a contribution is not required.

Support:

ECCOMAS will support each EAC event by providing a “template” for the Announcement Brochure. Support will also be provided in the general dissemination of the conference via the regular ECCOMAS channels (web page, emails, dissemination at conferences, etc.).

Corporate Identity:

Organizers of EACs must respect the ECCOMAS corporate visual identity (see brochure templates for details).

Materials text: The template materials are compressed in .zip format. You will find the layout file in Indesign CS5 and the fonts required.
